What are Food Sensitivities?

Food sensitivities occur when your immune system reacts to foods you’re eating as part of your everyday diet. Unlike food allergies, which lead to symptoms like hives, itching or anaphylaxis immediately after eating a particular food trigger, food sensitivities cause a delayed immune reaction. In fact, because of the gradual immune response produced with food sensitivities, symptoms can take as long as 72 hours (3 days!) to reach a peak!  

Because of the delay that often occurs between consuming your food triggers and the onset of symptoms, you may be eating foods to which you’re sensitive on a daily basis without even suspecting them to be an issue!  Regular consumption of foods that are activating your immune system leads to inflammation, and that inflammation is what causes the symptoms you’ve been experiencing.  These symptoms can include: fatigue, bloating, heartburn, digestive upset, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), anxiety, chronic sinus congestion or cough, eczema, acne, joint pain, migraines, headaches and more.

Let me share a story to help explain

Oneof our Elimination Diet Meal Plan members, Julie, is a perfect example of why a personalized approach to nutrition is SO important!  At age 46, Julie was bogged down with fatigue, unable to focus due to brain fog, and struggling to lose weight. Julie felt as though she had tried EVERYTHING to no avail.  She had lab testing through her medical doctor, but was told her results were normal. She had tried supplements to boost her nutrition and to improve her energy, with minimal benefit. Julie had also tried a number of different diet programs to lose weight, but the scale didn’t seem to budge.

Despite feeling exhausted, and frustrated with her lack of results, she was hopeful after learning that her friend had experienced success improving her energy and losing weight with the paleo diet (which is grain and dairy-free).  Feeling hopeful again, Julie decided to give the paleo diet a try!

It was one month after July had “gone paleo” and removed grains and dairy from her diet that she reached out to my team, feeling extremely frustrated and defeated.  Although she was strictly following the paleo diet, her level of exhaustion had intensified, she had gained 10 pounds of additional weight (seemingly all around her middle), her joints had started to ache, and the eczema she hadn’t experienced in years returned with a vengeance. 

Julie shifted her approach and began the Elimination Diet Meal Plan to reduce inflammation, while consuming a nutrient dense diet and avoiding all of the most common food sensitivities. Only 11 days later, at the end of the “Elimination Phase” she had already lost all of the extra 10 lbs she had gained the previous month.  Julie was also relieved that her eczema was almost fully resolved, that her mind felt clear and sharp so she could effectively focus at her job again, and that she had enough energy to tackle her to-do list each day. 

Now that Julie’s symptoms had resolved, it was time to identify which of the foods she was currently avoiding had been causing her body inflammation, fatigue and weight gain. One by one she reintroduced each food group while tracking her energy, skin health, weight and other symptoms. 

Through the “Reintroduction Process”, she identified that almonds and eggs caused her to become bloated, puffy and to feel exhausted, which were ingredients she had been relying on as staples while she was following the paleo diet!  Upon testing each food back into her diet, she also discovered that she tolerated grains and most dairy products without any issue. She was able to continue enjoying healthy grains like rice, quinoa and oats, along with some organic cheese, while continuing to lose weight and feeling energized and focused.
